West Delaware High School participated in a Veterans Day assembly on Nov. 11. in the Hanson Auditorium. Teacher Jordan Pollock arranged and prepared the event with seniors Nicholas Juergens and Bergan Blommers introducing the speakers.

Beginning the event, veterans posted the colors followed by West Delaware´s Concert Choir singing the national anthem. Larry Beeman, member of the American Legion Post 45, gave a speech to honor veterans and their families. In addition, veterans demonstrated the flag folding ceremony and enacted America’s White Table ceremony, honoring the men and women who have served in America’s armed forces.

Closing the ceremony, the Concert Band performed “Armed Forces Salute” while volunteers held up signs listing a branch of the military, encouraging the audience to stand to honor their family members in the armed forces.

Junior Ashley Schmitt felt the signs were especially touching as she was reminded of her military family members. “I look up to all who have served and highly respect them. They risked their lives for a greater good,” Schmitt said.

When the Army sign was held up, Kennedy Niles (10) stood in honor of her brother. “He has made me more aware of the people fighting for our country,¨ Niles said. ¨I thought is was a good thing that we took time out of our days to show respect to these people.”
