In May, the Hawk Track teams flew into state competition.
The boys qualified in six events and the girls in 10 events.
The teams experienced success throughout the season, breaking four school records.
At district qualifiers, Key’Sean Wilson (10) qualified in the sprint medley and won the 100-meter dash.
“I was really happy because a lot of people said that the competition there was really hard,” Wilson said. “I was just happy that I could overcome the competition and be able to take first.”
The team shares the same excitement.
“Everyone was super hype. It was just a good thing to be around. I love being around a team like that,” Wilson said.
Among the many qualifiers, Avery Schmitz (11) not only qualified in three events but also broke three school records.
“It was relieving because in the middle of the season, we were at a down point, and we hadn’t really been hitting the times that we wanted to hit,” Schmitz said. “So it was definitely a great feeling to be able to break those records, and it’s exciting to move on to state to hopefully do the same thing there.”
Schmitz looks forward to competing at state.
“I think we’re all super excited,” Schmitz said. “We’re seeded second going into shuttle hurdle, so we’re hoping to come out on top and beat ADM (Adel DeSoto Minburn). It’s a great experience to be able to go down and do that.”
