Would you donate blood just to get out of class?

That is exactly what teacher Mary Wegmann did her sophomore year in high school. “It may have been for the wrong reasons in the beginning, but it turned into a habit,” Wegmann said.

From what she has written down and can remember, Wegmann has donated blood 70 times, but she was rejected 30 times because of a low iron count.

The Red Cross sends Wegmann emails telling her when and where there is going to be a blood drive, and whenever it fits in her schedule, she will give blood.

“I feel guilty if I can’t donate,” said Wegmann, who feels it’s her duty to help whenever she can.

She gives blood because it’s an easy way to make a difference, and it may help people in a life and death situation.

“When you look at the facts, it’s incredible what a difference you can make,” she said.
