Kaidyn Robbins (10) was nominated for All-State Individual Speech for his acting piece “No More Mr. Funny Guy.” He performed his piece at the University of Northern Iowa All-State Festival on March 30.
In his performance of “No More Mr. Funny Guy,” his character complains to the audience that he can never get a date because he is known as the comedy-relief friend.
During his season, Robbins struggled stepping out of his comfort zone.
“I was pushed to take risks in my performance, but that challenge helped me grow and become a more confident actor,” Robbins said.
Robbins’ coach helped him a lot during his season.
“My coach, Nathan Lamb, really helped me during individual speech season by giving me helpful feedback, encouraging me, and pushing me to be my best,” Robbins said.
Lamb was thrilled with Robbins’ performance. He thought Robbins had a high chance if he caught the attention of the judge in the room.
“I was quite happy to hear that he made it,” Lamb said.
During Robbins’ season, his favorite moment from All-State was when his character fell after slipping on a banana peel.
“I actually fell and hit the ground really hard,” Robbins said. “I heard an audible gasp from the audience, but I had to get up and keep going. It ended up being pretty funny!”
