Over 100 songs.
Makayla Seeley (11) has written over 100 songs in her free time and is working toward an album, which she hopes to finish after she graduates.
“I’ve always liked the idea of having an album,” Seeley said. “It’s called ‘Shades of My Emotions,’ and I really like the album title.”
Since seventh grade, Seeley has been songwriting.
“I was going through a friendship breakup,” Seeley said. “I turned to songwriting because it was kind of my way of emotional release.”
Seeley finds inspiration for songs everywhere.
“I once wrote a song about growing old because I saw an old couple holding hands walking through the mall,” Seeley said. “I want that for myself when I’m older.”
Seeley’s favorite song is titled “Slow Down.”
“It’s about growing up,” Seeley said. “When you get to high school, you realize you actually don’t have a lot of time.”
Seeley enjoys performing her own songs at school events, such as the dinner show. She is most proud of the messages her songs convey to the audience.
“It makes me very happy because it’s my way of getting my emotions out, versus how other people use sports,” Seeley said.
Seeley’s dad owns audio equipment, which helps with her writing process.
“I do a pre-recording and figure out what layered background vocals and other instrumentals I want,” Seeley said. “I download it as a pre-recording so that I have what I want it to sound like.”
Eventually, Seeley plans to record her album in a professional studio and find a producer to publish it on music streaming services.
“Music is what brings everyone together,” Seeley said. “I can’t wait to be a part of that.”
