With three months into the season, both the boys’ and girls’ bowling teams have started the new year with a 2-1 record.

The boys won against Independence 2,948-2,131 and Vinton-Shellsburg 2,884-2,729 with a close loss against Decorah 2,745-2,763.

The girls’ team also beat out Independence 2,113-1,802 and Decorah 2,205-1,830 but were defeated by Vinton-Shellsburg 2,288-2,349.

Co-captain Trae Boge (11) led the team last year with his high individual average of 209.9, and he continues to improve with a current average of 212.7.

“Our team chemistry has been really good this year with balancing work and play during practices,” Boge said. “To me, I think we have a solid chance at State.”

The girls’ co-captain Andrea Salow (11) helps guide the girls with a high individual average of 181.3 pins.

“Our varsity experience comes from senior Miranda Axline and three-year starter, junior Andrea Salow,” coach Ken Boesenberg said. “They have been outstanding leaders thus far.”

Both teams also competed in the annual Prairie Baker Tournament hosted in Cedar Rapids at Lancer Lanes in December. The girls’ varsity group placed ninth after the first round, missing the chance to move on to quarterfinals.

However, the boys’ varsity squad advanced to semi-finals and brought home a third place title, which is the first time the boys have placed at this tournament since the high school program began. Bowlers who contributed include juniors Trae Boge, Jim Shover, Tristin Kelley, and Jeff Boeckenstedt, and sophomores Ian Tibbott and Alex Schnieders.

Friday, Jan. 13 is the teams’ next meet at home vs. Central DeWitt.
