Success—something that has eluded the West Delaware girls basketball team in recent years.

Newly hired Head Coach Brad Wubbena feels his team is on the right track to change that narrative.

“I am very hopeful we can grow the program,” Wubbena said. “I think it is going to take success and kids having fun.”

The Hawks grew their 4-17 record from the 2020-2021 season to a 10-13 record this past season. Returning players scored 74% of last year’s total.

“I hope that we can continue to build on the success that was achieved last year,” Wubbena said. “I want the girls to have a good time, a good experience, and become better basketball players than they were at the beginning of the season.”

In spite of the unexpected leave of previous head coach Matt Uthoff, Wubbena feels the transition has been seamless.

“The girls have been really good about working hard and getting to where we need them to be,” Wubbena said.

Wubbena is excited about the new opportunities that come with a head coaching position.

“I really enjoy being around the kids,” Wubbena said. “Teaching the sport and the game and seeing their successes are probably my favorite parts.”

The hopeful attitude of Wubbena and the relentless effort from the girls will have a great impact on the success of their upcoming season.

“We have really good skills on this team,” Wubbena said. “If we can learn to play the game, rather than just making movements, we are going to be a really hard team to beat.”
