Isabella Maule(12) donates blood at the 2018 Blood Drive.

Junior Brynn Boeckenstedt received three blood transfusions throughout her battle with cancer.

After doctors diagnosed Boeckenstedt at the age of 14, she fought Hodgkin’s Lymphoma for eight months. She then went into remission for 18 months until her cancer resurged, forcing her to battle it again for another four months. She is now cancer-free.

Many people, like Boeckenstedt, need blood transfusions to fight off life-threatening diseases.

When Boeckenstedt received a blood transfusion, she said, “It gave my body a kick-start and got my blood levels up high enough where they could work on their own.”

Boeckenstedt is extremely grateful for everyone who chooses to donate blood.

“Yes, I am thankful,” Boeckenstedt said. “Kids with blood cancers need them (blood transfusions) almost every day, especially people with rare blood types, like me.”

According to Giveblood.org, approximately 4.5 million people need blood transfusions annually. One way to help is by donating blood at a blood drive, either at school or in the community. Boeckenstedt said.

Lots of people don’t think it’s important, but you’re contributing to something larger,”

“If you aren’t donating, you should.”
