The fire alarm that detected the smoke from the classroom.

During second hour on Friday, Nov. 16, teachers and students were surprised when the fire alarms went off.

Two students in Foods II class were putting oil into a pan to make rice balls. The high temperature made the oil smoke, causing teacher Christian Carper to open the door to the hallway. The smoke then set off the fire alarms throughout the school.

Upon hearing the alarm, students and staff all went outside into the chilly morning air as practiced.

Oh my gosh! This is real!

— Hannah Mangold (12)

Senior Hannah Mangold left her classroom originally thinking it was a drill. When she saw the smoke-filled hallway, she said, “Oh my gosh! This is real!”

Carper said at first he was in shock. Then he knew he had to call the office to explain what happened and that there was no danger.

After the teachers and students returned to class, Foods II students were laughing and singing the song, “We Didn’t Start the Fire” by Billy Joel.
