Dress to Impress

Prom. What’s the first thought that comes to mind when we hear that word? Some people may say fancy dresses, others might think it’s going to be the night of their life, but most people just think of how expensive it can be.

Girls and boys both tend to go overboard when it comes to prom. Having the right pair of shoes is important even if people won’t see them. According to USA Today, on average girls spend up to $700 on one night. A girl’s dress does take up the majority of the cost, but a lot of girls buy new shoes, a purse and jewelry; get their nails, hair, and makeup done; and tan before the big day.

“I think everyone sees movies that show what they think a prom night should look like and then a lot of people get that idea in their head and think that’s how their prom should be,” Amber Cook (11) said.

The amount guys spend is typically less than girls. According to USA Today, boys tend to spend around $200. Renting their tux, buying the tickets, and most of the time buying the meal doesn’t compare to what girls pay.

Senior Noah Crumpton feels prom night gives everyone a chance to dress up.

“Prom is the one time of the year everyone gets to dress up and show their style,” Crumpton said.

Foreign exchange student Laia López Rigol (11) was surprised by how serious people take prom and the amount spent on it. López explained the closest event to prom in Spain is graduation, but it still doesn’t compare to prom.

“This is my one and only shot at prom, so I thought go big or go home,” López said.

Prom can be an expensive night, but it gives everyone the chance to dress to impress.
