Twenty-five female soccer players–a record number in five years.
Let’s be honest, soccer isn’t the sport that comes to mind when you talk about Iowa sports. However, this year, the girls soccer team is ready to be talked about.
New player Maryn Hoefer (10) is looking to find enjoyment in soccer.
“A bunch of my friends are going out, so I did as well,” Hoefer said. “I’m hoping to make fun memories and hopefully one goal this year.”
Even though there are many new members, four-year returner Sarah Perez (12) finds practices to be running smoothly.
“The new people catch on quickly and have an open mindset,” Perez said. “Some drills we take slowly and explain the skill.”
Freshman Kaci Reth hasn’t played soccer in three years. She decided to go out for soccer again to have a good time.
“Learning to kick is a new, difficult motion since you have to kick with the side of your foot and not your toe,” Reth said. “The coaches have been super helpful and take each drill step by step.”
With all the newcomers, coach Hannah Crumpton leads practice with confidence and adaptability.
“Fundamentals is always where I begin at the start of the season, if you’ve played for 10 years or 10 minutes,” Crumpton said.
She takes it slowly with the new players and motivates the experienced players to increase speed and fine-tune their skills.
“Each player will progress at different times,” Crumpton said. “It’s my job to encourage players to push themselves in skills when they are ready.”
The first game is 5 p.m. on April 3 at home and the outcome of the season looks promising with these coachable players. According to Crumpton, they ask the right questions and work hard to grow.
“With an open mind and a willingness to learn, the players have the first step to seeing success,” Crumpton said.
