Despite the weather causing the district speech competition to be rescheduled twice and canceling practices, the team powered through and sent sixteen events to the State Contest at Waterloo West High School on Feb. 2.

Fourteen out of sixteen events received Division Ⅰ ratings at the state contest. Of those 14 groups, three earned All-State nominations.

Those nominations included Coach Abby Osborne’s Varsity Choral Reading “How to Tell a True War Story,” which was chosen to perform at the All-State Festival. Also, Osborne’s Varsity Ensemble “Emergency Protocol” and Coach Nick Buskofsky’s ninth-grade Readers Theatre “Radio T.B.S.” was nominated but not chosen to perform.

The three groups who received nominations traveled to Ames on Saturday, Feb. 16, for the All-State Speech Large Group Festival.

Freshman Makayla Gasper’s ninth-grade Readers Theatre group was nominated for All-State.

“Being an All-Stater was absolutely amazing, ” Gasper said. “Getting to walk across the stage to accept awards, making new friends, and watching everybody improve over the season were definitely my favorite parts about the large group season.”
