Kyli Hass Job Shadows at ROCK 108

Senior Kyli Hass is taking control of her future.

Hass recently job shadowed at ROCK 108, a radio station in Waterloo.

Sending a Facebook message to the station, Hass asked if she could tour the radio station and learn more about what disc jockeys do.

When the day came for the visit, Hass and a friend traveled to the station to meet Ned, a DJ on ROCK 108.

Since all of the radio stations in Waterloo are located in the same building, Hass toured all of them. She met many of the DJs and learned what it is like to run a radio station.

Ned gave Hass many opportunities during her time at the station. She messed around with the microphone and recorded a sample talk, played with the sound board and even observed the DJ while on the air.

“I got to watch her stand behind the board and be on Facebook reading and picking out songs,” Hass said.

Preparing for a career in radio, Hass has started talking to local band members with hopes to send a practice track to ROCK 108.

Hass has been interested in rock music since she was little, but her interest in writing sparked when she took Journalism.

“I enjoyed writing about music and other people,” Hass said. “I’m really big into music and always have been.”

Next year, Hass plans to continue learning about radio broadcasting at the University of Northern Iowa and hopefully get an internship at Rock 108.
