Zumbach on Final Lesson

I’m sure many people recognize the words “talk less” and “smile more” from the renowned musical “Alexander Hamilton.” While working in the Iowa Senate, these words have gained a whole new meaning for me.
The phrase implies that occasionally it is better to smile and listen than it is to argue with someone. Many times Senators displayed this concept on the Senate floor. It makes the Senate a much more respectful place, not to mention it makes debate go by a lot faster. Also, when you listen to someone, instead of just shouting your opinions at them, it make for a much more civilized debate.
The Senators who feel the need to get up and discuss every bill that comes to the floor are not truly listened to. I watch senator reactions when these people talk; senators start answering emails, getting lunch, using the bathroom, or anything to not have to listen to them.
One senator rarely gets up to talk on bills and has been there for for almost 50 years. But when he does talk, everyone in the chamber listens, because they know that what he is saying is worth being heard. If it was not, he would not have said anything. Many other senators mimic this trait, and when they do, their words are taken much more to heart.
Senators are wise adults with many years of experience under their belts. Working at the Capitol, I have learned many things from them, and the ability to listen more and talk less is certainly one of the most important.
