Some athletes make noise with every step—and then there’s Avery Schmitz, whose quiet confidence draws attention . . . and medals.
Schmitz, a sophomore, recently began her second high school track season. She often runs the 100-meter hurdles, the shuttle hurdle relay, and the 4×400-meter relay.
During her freshman year, Schmitz qualified for the State Track Meet in the 100-meter hurdles, the shuttle hurdle relay, and the 4×400-meter relay. “She ran really well last year at State,” Head Coach Doug Engel said. “She’s definitely stronger than she was a year ago.”
Schmitz is dedicated to outperforming her opponents, as well as making self-improvements.
She goes to Bar Raising in Dyersville for extra reps. “I make sure to focus on the little things, like my form, to reduce my time as much as possible,” Schmitz said.
According to Engel, she’s been dedicated in the weight room this year, working closely with Coach Matt Seabold and making major strength gains.
While the outdoor season is still ramping up, Schmitz is expected to make waves in the 100-meter hurdles.
Schmitz hasn’t run the 100-meter hurdles yet this season, but her coach has high expectations. “I expect her to be in the top three or four once we do,” Engel said.
But for Schmitz, it’s not just about medals and times. Her drive extends from a desire for personal growth.
“At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what place I get as long as I am happy with how I have performed,” she said.
Last year’s state meet was a defining moment. Schmitz narrowly missed a title in a photo finish.
Despite last year’s results, her coach is excited about Schmitz’s upcoming season.
According to Engel, the girl who took first place over Avery at the State Track meet has already lost to Avery three times in the 100-meter hurdles this season.
Reflecting on her track experience as a whole, she adds, “I have made the most memories with the people there—whether it is during warm-ups, on the bus, or during the meet. West Delaware has a great program and team.”
