A three-foot metal welded flower with horseshoe petals—that’s the finished creation of senior Sarah Perez, who created a flower out of metal for the WaMac Art Show.
Perez has been making metal creations for about a year now, and this is her third creation. Her first creation was a sculpture of a metal hand and the second, a birdcage.
“I like to make metal creations,” Perez said.
Perez was inspired by a horseshoe clock she saw on the internet.
“When Sarah gets an idea, she’s all in on it,” art teacher Jolene Pitzenberger-Timp said. “She worked non-stop until it was completed. It is a work of pride and joy.”
She worked on the project in her Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) classes.
Perez used the techniques learned during her welding classes, gathered various pieces of scrap metal—pipes, horseshoes, and other materials—and set to work.
The flower also serves as a clock, a feature she added to give the project more life and depth.
After just three weeks of work the project was completed and now awaits the WaMac Art Show. Perez intends to give the creation to her aunt. “I think that she’ll really enjoy the different complexities of the piece,” Perez said.
In the future, Perez plans to create more metal art. “I will probably sell other art in the future if it turns out well,” Perez said.
