The H.A.W.K.S. Nest is gaining interest!
A new study space, called the H.A.W.K.S Nest, is for all high school students to catch up on work, take a missed test, and meet to complete a group project.
For the first semester, the H.A.W.K.S Nest is available to students in the library on Nov. 6, Nov. 20, Dec. 11, Dec. 18, and Jan. 8. This room is available on Wednesdays after the early dismissal from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m.
“A total of six students showed up for the first opening. Eighteen students showed up the second time when snacks were provided,” said Corey Coates, Alternative School Coach.
Although Coates is the room’s advisor, he has many other helpers who play a big role in this program.
Instructional Coach Jamie Smith, school counselor Shelby Piersh, NHS members, and student council members help peer edit and welcome students into the H.A.W.K.S Nest. Jackie Lahr, volunteer coordinator, organized the volunteers for this room. McKenna Kelly, the Brain Health Room liaison, is also there to help provide services to students.
“It is not a punishment or requirement,” Coates said.
Students at West Delaware utilize this room to help focus on their homework.
Savanna Hamm (10) enjoys this room because she wants to prioritize her homework. The H.A.W.K.S Nest allows her to get her homework done with no excuses. “This room is very helpful for me to focus on what needs to be done,” Hamm said. “It’s a fun space to complete my homework.”
