FFA members participated in sub-districts at Maquoketa Valley Schools on Feb. 20. West Delaware FFA adviser Rachel Findling traveled with 25 members, almost tripling their numbers from previous years.
Three of the groups are advancing to districts on March 9 in Waukon.
Junior Kate Wenger, who joined FFA a year ago, competed in public speaking, which is an individual event. She finished with gold and qualified as an alternate to districts!
Wenger said, “I was proud of myself.”
She started preparing her six-to-eight-minute speech in October of 2023. “When I had a final draft, I read my speech almost every single day and practiced my hand gestures,” said Wenger.
According to Findling, most of the students have been coming in since November at least once a week to practice.
“They have been working hard on their contests, and I think it was just hard work paying off,” Findling said. “I was incredibly happy about the results from sub-districts.”
